Start on Main Street. The courthouse, public library, theater, and local organizations offer different ways into the life of Enterprise. The chamber’s community guide also points outward to foundries, historic barns, and the Wallowa Mountains.

This town introduction connects places that often live in separate directories: a writing organization, a rural hospital, a brewery, and the people working on land stewardship. Together they provide a starting point for understanding everyday life here.

The circa-1912 postcard is a historical view of Enterprise. It is not presented as an exact before-and-after match to a contemporary street photograph.

Chapter 03 Towns & settlement

Every main street has many lives.

In Enterprise a theater waited out the flu, in Joseph a bank kept a hospital upstairs, and in Lostine a pharmacy shared its roof with a lodge. On these main streets, every doorway has a second story.

An atlas essay Beyond the familiar account

Lettuce, a carousel, and firewood bound for Dallas

In 1923, Wallowa County set out to become lettuce country, and by 1939 the climate had won. The trying is the story: a horse-powered carousel, firewood shipped to Dallas, a general store with its own radio.

Records, and what they leave out

In 1995, the court papers from an 1888 murder trial turned up in a Wallowa County safe. Every record in this county was kept by someone, and every silence has a story too.
